a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
