A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Verily we are undone. 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
