A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
