A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
