a large group of the earlier people 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
