a multitude of the ancients, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
