a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
