A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
