A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
