The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who pray, 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
