The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
