The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
