The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 save those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
