The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
