The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 except those that pray, 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
