The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
