The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Eager to roast; 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
