The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
