The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
