The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
