The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
