The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 But not so the worshippers 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
