The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Eager to roast; 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
