The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place – 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
