The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those that pray 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
