In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O thou folded in garments! 1 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- 2 It may be half the night or a little less than that 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender - 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. 14 We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh. 15 However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 The heaven will split asunder with its grief; the promise of Allah will surely occur. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
