Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 For We are about to send down to you a message of considerable gravity. 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. 7 Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh. 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 How then, if ye disbelieve, shall ye escape, on a Day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
