Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 This is a reminder. Let anyone who wants, seek guidance from his Lord. 19
