The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked round; 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
