The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
