The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he thought; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
