The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
