The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and who still desires more. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 it scorches the skin; 29 over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
