The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 Purify your inner self, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 May he be condemned! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He looked (at others); 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
