The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord glorify 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And all abomination shun! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 May he be condemned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 it scorches the skin; 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
