Nay; I swear by the moon, 32 and by the night when it recedes, 33 And the daybreak when it shines; 34 Verily it is one of the greatest woes. 35 a warning to humans, 36 to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind. 37 Every soul shall be pledged for what it has earned, 38 Save those who will stand on the right hand. 39 [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other 40 About the guilty: 41 'What caused you to be thrust into the Scorching (Fire)' 42 They will answer: “We were not among those who observed Prayer, 43 we fed not the needy, 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 And we used to deny the Day of Recompense 46 “Till death overcame us.” 47 The intercession of their intercessors shall not benefit them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 like frightened donkeys 50 Fleeing away from a lion. 51 In fact every one of them wants to be given open books (like the prophets). 52 No! They do not fear the Hereafter -- 53 Yes indeed, this is an advice. 54 Let him then who heeds remember it. 55 And they will not mind unless Allah please. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive. 56
