He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 when the blind came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
