He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you ignore him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted and purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 Olives and dates, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
