He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 you attended to him, 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
