He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to a rich man, 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And whereas he fears, 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And olives and palms 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
