He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 You pay full attention, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And he fears, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 then eased his path for him, 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 fruits, and grass. 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing and joyous 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
