He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble and pious. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 Mother and father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing and joyous 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
