Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
