Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 into My Paradise. 30
