Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
