Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
