Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
