Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
