Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
