Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My servants. 29 into My Paradise. 30
